HAYWARD, Calif. – Ricky Palad is the store manager for Island Pacific Seafood Market, Hayward branch and has been selected for the Bagong Bayani Profiles.
Palad has been with the company for six years.
As an essential worker during the coronavirus pandemic, Palad knows he has a great responsibility not just to his employees but to the community.
“With this covid pandemic, we try our best to give our customers the assurance that we are here for them,” said Palad.

Island Pacific Seafood Market in Hayward has signs requiring masks be worn inside the store. Similar to other Island Pacific’s, this location provides sanitation wipes for shopping carts and has also installed sneeze guards at each cashier station. The pathways to the cashiers are also taped to separate customers by six feet to implement social distancing.
Palad does not deny that there is a certain risk as an essential worker, especially in a supermarket where a variety of people visit every day.
“Everytime I go to work I have the fear, what if I could get the virus because I have a family,” said Palad. “I have kids who have asthma and my wife who has heart problems. I’m really scared but it’s my job so I need to help people and serve the community.”
Despite the seriousness of the virus, Palad remains optimistic and good things will come out of it.
“This kind of crisis, it makes us strong,” he said.
Palad adds that while customers can always use online ordering to either pick up their groceries or have them delivered, they are still welcomed to come to the store.

“I know this crisis shall pass and Island Pacific serves with a happy heart,” said Palad. “Stay safe.”
