Pittsburg Threw A Mother’s Day Special To Remember: Polvoron, Music, & Food

On Saturday, May 2nd, what started as an advance Mother’s Day Special quickly became so much more than anyone expected at Island Pacific Pittsburg. In partnership with Goldilocks, Island Pacific Seafood Market hosted a Polvoron Eating Contest, and the community came through in full force! 

The day actually started long before the main event. Our Pinoy Street Food Weekend Series kicked off at 10 AM, and the lines forming outside said everything. By the time 4 PM rolled in, the contest officially began, and Island Pacific had fully transformed into the kind of celebration that makes you feel like you’re in the Philippines. The noise, the laughter, the smell of Filipino food in the air? It was all there.

The musical performances have also set the tone. Ruby Ibarra took the stage alongside the powerhouse collective Pinay Voltron and performed her NPR Tiny Desk-winning track “Bakunawa,” a proud and spine-tingling moment for every Filipino in the room. But the crowd went crazier when they transitioned into covering the ultimate Filipino karaoke anthem, “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes. Every single person was singing at the top of their lungs, and it was one of those moments you just had to be there for.

Then came the Polvoron Eating Contest. The real entertainment was not about who got the $100 cash prize. It was watching each contestant face off against the notoriously dry texture of sweet polvoron, finish it, and whistle. G-Tongi kept the ball rolling, working the crowd like only she could, with the continuous cheering and hollering at every round. The excitement was so contagious that walk-in sign-ups had to be opened on the spot to keep up with the demand. 

And then the dancing started. Because if there is music playing and Filipinos are present, a line dance is practically inevitable. Everyone showed up and showed out on the floor, a beautiful reminder that our community does not just sing. We move, we celebrate, and we bring everyone along with us.

Multiple content creators were also on the ground, capturing everything as it happened. What stood out was how naturally they blended into the crowd. They were not just creating buzz online. They were showing the world how Filipinos celebrate and how we can turn something as simple as a grocery store gathering into something grand and memorable. Their talents sparked curiosity and welcomed everyone, across all cultures and backgrounds, to see themselves in our community.

Island Pacific is truly one of a kind. Who would have thought that this level of celebration was happening inside a supermarket? Good thing we have a lot more in store for you.
